Throughout the history, our regulations and institutions have neglected the appropriate respect for ecosystems. Glaciers particularly have not been protected under any law that ensures their protection and preservation. At present, the mining impact jeopardizes the future of glaciers in our country. The constituent process that will take place in October of this year will be a democratic instance that will provide us the option to prioritize nature and the care of our country’s ecosystems.
Taking account of this problem, the Eco-Civic Talk: Glacier Protection and Constituent Process is proposed as an initiative of the Glaciares Chilenos Foundation for the public.
this instance pretends to spread education and make visible the laws that currently exist regarding our glaciers, as well as the draft laws that have been a long-time processing. On the other hand, the timeline of the constituent process taking place in October will be presented, which could make possible the creation of a new Constitution, linked to the future of the Chilean glaciers’ protection. Auditors will also be invited to participate in this democratic process.
It will be carried out during September and October, and the first instance will be held on Thursday, September 3rd at 7 pm, through Facebook Live and YouTube Live platforms.
Since our society faces these environmental challenges, as citizens we must be involved in both ecological and civic measures to take care of our ecosystems. Individual responsibilities such as recycling and reducing consumption are not enough; institutional protection of the natural environment is fundamental and necessary. In the upcoming constituent process, we will have the opportunity to choose the priorities that could be included in the new Constitution, which will provide the proper importance to the protection of ecosystems and glaciers.
The glacier protection is everyone’s challenge. ¡Be part of it!
