… AN EMBLEMATIC GLACIER IN DARWIN’S VIEW…
One of the glaciers that every sailor hopes to see when crossing the Beagle Channel, in the southern area, is the iconic Italia Glacier, which steadily descends from the upper ice fields and falls into the waters of the famous channel, with an orientation towards the South, and sustained in time with its abysmal forms, due to the permanent gloom with which it coexists. In winter, the absence of sunlight is absolute on its icy platform. The Italia Glacier descends from the ice fields of the Darwin Range, a mountain range located entirely in the Alberto de Agostini National Park, in the Southwest section of the Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego. The Italia Glacier descends abruptly between Mount Italia and Mount Francés, watchtowers that flank this wonderful glacier and falls into the waters of the Beagle Channel through the southern Darwin mountain range.
Las primeras expLorations inside, occurred in the last century by Italian mountaineers, led by the famous explorer of the Salesian order, the Priest Alberto de Agostini, who insistently toured these “Fuegian Alps” as they called these wild places at that time. It should be noted that in 2004 and 2005 the first winter expeditions were made in this area, by a team from the University of Magallanes, led by the undersigned. The explorations were framed in developing the same routes as the Salesian Mountaineer.
